Who Am I to Be Writing This?

A Journey of Faith, Identity, and Empowerment

Have you ever asked yourself, "Who am I to have something meaningful to say? Who am I to write words that others will listen to?" I’ve asked these questions countless times. For years, my identity was wrapped up in the roles I played: the athlete, the wife, the mother, the counselor, and later, the coach’s wife and default parent. Each role shaped me in profound ways—some empowering, others leaving me feeling lost. But through it all, I discovered something life-changing: my true identity wasn’t in any of these roles. It was rooted in faith.

The Roles That Defined Me
My story began as a young athlete driven by ambition and competition. Then came adulthood, where I became a wife and later a mother—a role I had always envisioned for myself. Motherhood brought joy but also fear as my focus shifted entirely to my family. After having two children back-to-back, I added another identity: counselor. Helping parents and children manage emotions and rebuild relationships gave me purpose.

But life took an unexpected turn when my husband struggled with his career and our relationship began to crumble. I gave him space to pursue his dreams, but this left me navigating life as a mother who had to hold all the roles while my husband left to try and make a way for our family, living in another state with little income or stability. Suddenly, I wasn’t just the coach’s wife—I was carrying the weight of multiple roles alone. These identities became who I was, defining me to others and myself. Some days they empowered me; other days they left me questioning my worth, my value.

The Breaking Point
As life felt like it was falling apart, God began speaking into my heart in ways I hadn’t experienced before. He showed me that my identity wasn’t tied to the roles I proclaimed—it was rooted in Him. He broke me down and rebuilt me, changing my mindset and revealing His purpose for my life. But this transformation didn’t come easily.

The defining moment came after a car accident that nearly took my life and my daughters’. Sitting in a hospital bed unable to walk temporarily, I felt powerless—physically, mentally, emotionally. Losing such a basic ability shook every identity I had built for myself. How could I be a mother if I couldn’t care for my children? How could I be strong if I couldn’t even stand? In that moment of despair, God revealed the truth: my real power wasn’t in what I could do but in the faith I held onto.

Faith as Power
Faith became my anchor when everything else felt uncertain. It allowed me to see hope when my circumstances screamed otherwise. It reminded me that through Christ’s strength, I could endure anything—even moments when walking seemed impossible or identities felt shattered.

Faith taught me that while roles may change or fade away, God’s purpose for us remains steadfast. He saved us from an accident we shouldn’t have survived—not just physically but spiritually—to remind me of His calling on my life, on our lives.

Rewriting My Story
As I reflect on this journey, I realize that we all have stories we tell ourselves—narratives shaped by our experiences and identities. But what happens when those stories no longer serve us? What happens when they limit who we are instead of empowering us?

God invited me to rewrite my story—not by erasing the past but by reframing it through His lens of truth and purpose. Here’s what rewriting your story might look like:

Recognize Limiting Beliefs
Identify the narratives holding you back (e.g., "I’m not enough," "I can’t do this").

Reframe Your Perspective
Replace limiting beliefs with empowering truths rooted in faith (e.g., "Through Christ’s strength, I am capable").

Embrace Your True Identity
Understand that your worth isn’t tied to roles or achievements but to who God says you are: loved, chosen, and purposed.

Live Out Your New Narrative
Align your daily actions with your renewed mindset and purpose.

Your Faith Is Your Power
If you’ve ever felt lost or defined by roles that no longer fulfill you, know this: your faith is your greatest power. It’s what sustains you when everything else feels uncertain. Hold onto it tightly as you navigate life’s challenges—it will guide you toward growth, healing, and purpose.

So who am I to be writing this? Someone who has walked through brokenness and found hope in Christ. Someone who knows firsthand how faith can transform even the darkest moments into opportunities for renewal. And someone who believes that you can rewrite your story too—with faith as your foundation.

Let this be your reminder: You are not defined by your roles or circumstances—you are defined by God’s love and purpose for you. Hold close to Him as you rewrite your narrative into one of empowerment and grace.
